A Bit of History Repeating

Historical Trauma and Systemic Racism’s Effect on Minority Mental Health

Experiences of race-based discrimination can and do have harmful effects on people and their wider communities. Nationally, people of color are more likely to live in poverty and/or face arrest and jail than their White peers.

Using a mixture of historical data and lived experience testimonials, this training explores the history of why and how this situation is the result of decades of systemic and structural reinforcement from how the census data was historically collected, to how crime is reported in the media.
